In an emergency, calm and clear action keeps children safe. The Chrysalis maintains well-rehearsed procedures so that every member of staff knows exactly what to do, and every child is accounted for and protected.
Being Prepared
We prepare for emergencies before they happen:
- Clear evacuation routes and assembly points are established
- Exits are kept clear and accessible at all times
- Emergency contact details for every child are kept current
- Staff know their specific roles in an emergency
Evacuation Procedure
If evacuation is needed, staff will:
- Raise the alarm calmly and clearly.
- Lead children quickly and safely along the nearest safe route.
- Bring the class register and emergency contacts.
- Gather at the designated assembly point.
- Take a register to account for every child and adult.
- Keep children calm and reassured until it is safe to return or until parents collect them.
Fire Safety
We take fire prevention seriously β through safe practices, accessible extinguishing equipment, and keeping escape routes clear. Staff are briefed on fire safety, and we hold practice drills so that evacuation becomes calm and familiar for children.
Medical Emergencies
In a medical emergency, trained first-aiders act immediately, emergency services are called without delay, and parents are contacted straight away. A staff member stays with the child at all times.
Lockdown & External Threats
In the rare event of an external threat, staff move children to a safe, secure area, keep them calm and quiet, and follow guidance from the authorities. Parents are informed as soon as it is safe to do so.
Practice Drills
We hold regular evacuation drills so that both staff and children know what to do. Drills are conducted calmly and are treated as a normal, reassuring part of school life β never something to frighten children.
After an Emergency
Following any emergency, we review what happened, support any child or staff member affected, and update our procedures where we can do better. Parents are kept fully informed throughout.
